What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest systems of holistic healing, developed in India over 5,000 years ago.

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word which translates as “AYUR” meaning life and “VEDA” meaning knowledge or science’. So  Ayurveda quite literally means the wisdom or science of life.Ayurveda is a way of living that brings us into harmony with ourselves and with nature. It teaches that health is not just the absence of illness, but a dynamic state of wellbeing between body, mind, and soul.

Ayurveda recognises that everything in the universe including us is made up of the five elements: SPACE, AIR, FIRE, WATER and EARTH. These elements combine together known as DOSHAS to create our unique mind, body type. When we understand how the energies express through us we gain much needed insight into how to live in a way that supports our own natural rhythm.This wisdom helps us align with the cycles of the day, the seasons, and the different stages of life. It invites us to slow down, tune in and live with more awareness. It teaches us how to use daily rituals, food, herbs, movement, breathwork and rest as medicine.

Ayurveda isn’t about perfection, it’s about remembering our wholeness and coming home to ourselves. It’s a path of self-discovery and healing that reconnects us to nature, and to our true essence.

The principles of Ayurveda

Influences of the Doshas

Ayurveda offers a deeply personalised approach and unlike conventional approaches that focus only on symptoms, Ayurveda looks at the whole person, recognising the influences of the Doshas.

Vata = Air & Ether
Pitta = Fire & Water
Kapha = Earth & Water

By learning how these energies show up in our body and mind, we can understand what nourishes us and what throws us out of balance.

These Doshas govern every aspect of existence from our nervous, respiratory & digestive system to our emotions and thought patterns. When in balance, we feel vibrant, energized, and at ease. When out of balance, we may experience fatigue, stress, digestive issues, poor sleep, hormone imbalances, or emotional overwhelm.

Ayurveda isn’t about restriction or one-size-fits-all solutions it’s about learning to understand your unique body and what it needs to thrive. When we work with our bodies rather than against them, healing happens naturally.
